Do I need a special driver's licence to tow a fifth-wheel caravan or trailer with my ute? A. No. In Queensland a normal C Class (car) driver's licence allows the operator to drive a vehicle up to 4.5 tonnes GVM, with or without a trailer. No specific limits are placed on trailer types, though clearly it must be a legal combination in terms of towing weight limits for the specific tow vehicle, and the trailer must be compliant with relevant vehicle standards. Licence requirements in other states should now be very similar, thanks to moves to improve alignment some years ago. MODIFICATION INCONSISTENCIES Q. Will modifications to my car that were approved in my home state be approved in Queensland when I relocate and re-register it there? A. They may, or may not, be. Unfortunately, there isn't complete harmony between all states as to what is an acceptable modification. And certain complex modifications that have specific engineering approval by an authorised signatory in your home state may not be recognised in Queensland. Therefore, you would need to gain a new approval from a local signatory. If the modification doesn't meet Queensland requirements, approval may not be given or alterations may be needed prior to granting of an approval. In the case of minor discrepancies, a Letter of Approval from DTMR may be possible. POLLEN FILTERS Q. The invoice for my car's last service shows charges for a new pollen filter. What is this and do they need replacement? A. An increasing number of vehicles have pollen filters fitted and, typically, they are scheduled for cleaning or renewal at intervals between 15,000km and 90,000km, or one to two years. Consult your vehicle's service schedule handbook. These filters are fitted in the car's cabin ventilation system and filter air contaminants such as pollen, dust, odours, pollutants, mould and fungal spores that can have adverse effects on occupants. How sophisticated and effective the filters are can vary. A clogged filter can reduce ventilation system airflow. NEED HELP?
