Fully electric, the Nissan LEAF is a five- door hatchback that produces no CO2 emissions (it doesn’t even have a tailpipe) and relies on a lithium-ion battery that can handle up to 120km of driving from each full charge. The Royal Pines Resort at Benowa on the Gold Coast has one Nissan Leaf, while the RACV Resort at Noosa has two. When guests aren’t using them, RACQ members are able to hire the vehicles. For many people this may be the first opportunity they have to drive an electric car. Drivers are asked to stay within 50km of the resort or within range of a public charging station. RACV will install public charging facilities at Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast and Currumbin Bird Sanctuary on the Gold Coast this year. This will mean visitors can use the cars to attend these popular attractions and have BIKE RULES CLARIFICATION The last edition of The Road Ahead discussed the rules applying to bike riders overtaking cars on the left. Bike riders are allowed to overtake a vehicle on the left, provided it is not indicating and turning. This lane filtering saves time for everyone. It is useful if drivers leave space in the left hand lane for bikes to filter through. RACQ members gain generous discounts at these attractions as well. The chargers are compliant with all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles available in Australia except Teslas, which require a converter cable. A Tesla wall charger is available at the RACV Royal Pines Resort. Both resorts provide discounts for RACQ members. ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR Young bike riders will be among the winners at the RACQ Driving the Future transport zone at the Chermside Green Heart Fair on May 29. RACQ patrols will be undertaking free bike checks for children from 9am to 2pm. Like all fairs, there will be something for everyone. We’ll have experts who can give you the lowdown on local public transport, a range of interesting vehicles to view, and an opportunity to learn how to save money on your fuel bill using an online tool. The Green Heart Fair offers a family- friendly environment along with cooking demonstrations, eco experts, artisan markets, gourmet food, endless activities for children, and all-day free entertainment with crowd favourite, Peppa Pig. You can attend workshops on growing vegies, keeping bees, raising happy, health chooks, and making Kokedama hanging plants, all backed by great live music. The event will be near the Kidspace Playground at 7th Brigade Park, Murphy Road, Chermside. n Hire a Nissan Leaf while holidaying at RACV resorts.
