I fell in love with Peru, its people and its history. When’s the best time to go? Probably from June to September, when it’s mostly sunny and cool (can be cold at night) in the mountain regions. It’s very different on the coast at Lima and also in the jungle regions. What are the highlights? Machu Picchu is breathtaking. I suggest a tour that includes the train from Cuzco and spends a night at the lost city of the Incas. Cuzco is fascinating, with wonderful, colourful people, narrow streets and alleyways and nearby Inca ruins. Is it safe? Yes, relatively so, but take the usual precautions. Remember, this is a tourist area and there are people on the lookout for soft touches. Health matters. See your GP or travel medicine specialist before booking a trip to South America. You’ll need some vaccinations and advice on preparing for and dealing with walking at altitude in places like Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Do Australians need a visa? For Peru, no. But if you’re visiting other South American countries you may need to allow time to obtain relevant visas, so plan ahead.
