150 MUST-DOS TOP TEN TRAVEL + LIFESTYLE CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Our top must do’s After more than 155,000 votes over two and a half months, the verdict is in. Queensland’s top 10 must do’s have been selected. WHAT DO A RAINFOREST CASTLE,a world-class zoo, a powerboat-racing event and the world’s largest sand island have in common? They’re all part of the top 10 in RACQ’s 150 Must-Do’s in Queensland. Voters relished the opportunity to have their say on their favourite Queensland experience and the top 10 became a closely fought battle during the voting period. Number one was Paronella Park, a distinctive attraction located at Mena Creek, 109 km south of Cairns. When Jose Paronella built his magnificent castle in the rainforest in 1913 as a labour of love, he couldn’t have guessed how much the travelling public would grow to love it too. The beauty of the castle, its surrounding gardens and the inspirational story behind its creation has enchanted visitors and prompted them to vote. The natural beauty of Fraser Island propelled that destination to number two, with its sandy beaches, lush rainforests, freshwater lakes and native wildlife making FRASER ISLAND, PARONELLA PARK, BUNDY THUNDER, BRISBANE RIVER ADVENTURES,WHALE WATCHING, GUURRBI TOURS, STOCKMAN’S HALL OF FAME AND QANTAS FOUNDERS MUSEUM, TOYOTA NATIONAL COUNTRY MUSIC MUSTER, AUSTRALIA ZOO AND PORTSIDE. it a favourite for adventure and relaxation. A visit to Fraser Island is not only a favourite place for Queenslanders to escape the grind of everyday life, it’s also a favourite for overseas guests. Australia Zoo’s up-close wildlife experience has also made it a local and international favourite, as well as number three on the list. The growing zoo is not only home to the huge saltwater crocs that entertain guests in the Crocoseum but an array of animals from around the world, including Asian elephants and Bengal tigers. The Fraser Coast region was well represented in the top 10,with Portside in Maryborough voted in at number four and whale watching at Hervey Bay number five. Portside’s stately buildings along the Mary River allow an insight into the history of the region, while whale watching on the calm, protected waters near Hervey Bay has become a ritual between July and November. visit 150mustdos.com.au MAKES YOUR DAY TOP 10 1.
