BE SAFE ON THE ROAD editor's note TRAVEL + LIFESTYLE EDITOR'S NOTE + HAVE YOUR SAY HAVE YOU SAY: EMAIL ROADAHEAD@RACQ.COM.AU. FAX 3257 1863. MAIL THE ROAD AHEAD, P.O. BOX 4, SPRINGWOOD, QLD 4127. PLEASE INCLUDE NAME AND ADDRESS. LETTERS WILL NOT RECEIVE AN INDIVIDUAL REPLY. DOING WHATEVER IT can to help keep people safe on the road has long been a priority of the RACQ. Many Queensland families are affected by road trauma, either by losing friends and relatives or by having them seriously injured in car crashes. It's unfortunate that the mobility we all crave through the independence of owning a car or motorbike, brings with it an element of danger every time we leave our own driveways. Road safety is a key theme in this edition. We look at safety ratings for used cars based on real-world crashes, the changing requirements for child restraints and keeping young drivers safer and more informed through RACQ initiatives, like free2go. SUPPORTING TOOWOOMBA Toowoomba has encountered some serious road trauma incidents in recent years. So, it's good to see that on November 14, the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland, with government departments and local groups, will stage a DRIVE4LIFE Expo at the Toowoomba Showgrounds. The idea is to raise awareness of the serious road trauma involving young people in the region and to raise funds for initiatives that will help young drivers be better prepared. RACQ Insurance is a key sponsor. ey spo sor . EDITOR'S PICK CONFUSED BY SPEED LIMIT SIGNS I refer to the photograph taken at the surfside end of First Avenue, Bribie Island, in late August. Is it no wonder that we simple motorists are confused when confronted with roadside signage such as this? It's hard enough keeping track of which speed limit zone we are driving in without adding to the confusion by grouping three of them within metres of each other. Please help us motorists do the right thing and make it a little clearer what speed you really want us to drive at. G. ALLEN, BURPENGARY Editor: For writing this edition's best letter, G. Allen, of Burpengary, will receive an iVoice R1 Bluetooth car kit, valued at $149. The iVoice features up to 30 hours of talk time, can be paired to two phones simultaneously and is compatible with V2.1 Bluetooth phones such as iPhone and Blackberry. It comes with a two-year manufacturer's warranty. The iVoice R1 Bluetooth car kit is available from selected RACQ offices and online at www.racq.com. SLOW GOING A bonus for the bus travellers, but a nightmare for the car driver. Since the opening of the new busway at the RBWH, there are now nine sets of traffic lights on Bowen Bridge Road between Water Street and Northey Street. Hope the lights are properly synchronised. G. VAN BEEK, PLAINLAND ELECTRIC VEHICLES It's great to see increased research into technology to develop electric vehicles. The drawback with the current range of electric vehicles is the distance they can travel before needing a recharge. Electric vehicle manufacturers, in conjunction with the government, should look at developing a standard sized battery pack with a standard connector. When your battery gets low, you could pull into a service station, replace your battery with a fully charged one, pay the attendant and drive off. N. LOCK, DECEPTION BAY REBUILD MARYSVILLE More than six months have passed since 'Black Saturday' and the destruction of Marysville in Victoria. The rebuilding has begun and that includes the historical collection that was lost in the fires, but help is needed. I would like to hear from anyone who has photos, postcards, slides, maps, letters or other memorabilia from Marysville and surrounding townships. Please phone (03) 9787 6990, email andrewmackenzie2@bigpond.com or mail to PO Box 559, Mount Eliza, Victoria 3930. A. MACKENZIE, MT ELIZA THOUGHTS ON SPEED Speed is a contributing factor in serious crashes. Speed is caused by two factors: (a) Too much power under the bonnet and (b) too little grey matter under the cranium. B.
