TARGA TASMANIA -- TWO words that resonate for motorsport enthusiasts everywhere. In its 19-year history, this annual tarmac rally has grown into a world class event of its type. A cornerstone to Targa Tasmania's success is the labyrinth of public roads across the state that are closed to allow more than 300 modern, classic and competition cars to be driven to their full potential by some of the best drivers in the business. These are called Ta r ga stages. Now, for those that aspire to drive some of the very roads that lure back motor sport legends such as Jim Richards year after year with their compelling challenge, there's a brand new event for RACQ members. A week-long grand tour, not a race, Targa Turismo has been specifically planned to provide participants with an insight to the Targa experience, but in safety and at legal road speeds. Camaraderie, not competition, is the objective, with plenty of time set aside to discover and celebrate Ta s mania's 'wow' factor. Participants can bring their own classic or post- classic car or choose to drive a selection of sports and prestige vehicles provided. This stable of highly-desirable machinery will include a selection from among Porsche Boxster and MINI Cooper convertibles, Volkswagen Golf GTi, Lexus IS250, 1.8-litre supercharged Mercedes-Benz and BMW 530i. For those bringing their own classic, a porthole cabin and car space on the Spirit of Tasmania, return from Melbourne to Devonport, is included (travel to and from Melbourne is at the participant's expense). Vehicle hire is included in the cost for those opting to drive the sports and prestige vehicles provided (the cost of flights to and from Hobart is at the participant's expense). The two groups will meet up in Hobart on Friday November 18 for lunch on the Tasmanian capital's historic waterfront. Following a comprehensive briefing, Targa Turismo will formally start with a STORY BARRY GREEN | PHOTOS TOURISM TASMANIA tour de force Ever wanted to see Tasmania through the windscreen of a sporty car -- yours, or someone else's?
