The Road Ahead : April 2011
DEPARTURE NATIONAL MAKES YOUR DAY APR/MAY 2011 THE ROAD AHEAD 29 mid-afternoon drive over the famous Wrest Point Targa stages, followed by a welcome dinner in the evening. Breakfast will be taken at the Salamanca Markets before driving on to the historic village of Richmond, then the Grass Tree Hill Targa stage, before arriving at Moorilla Estate winery for wine tasting and lunch at the acclaimed Source Restaurant. A highlight will be a visit to the newly opened MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). In gallery space, MONA is comparable to Brisbane's GOMA, but its true claim to fame is its sheer lack of convention. At MONA, expect the unexpected. On Sunday, Targa Turismo points north from Hobart to Tasmania's second largest city, Launceston. The route takes in Bothwell and Longford, and includes the latter's fabled Targa stage. Monday is a touring day where participants will confront the Lilydale and Beaconsfield Targa stages. But it won't be just about the driving -- a pleasant detour to Pipers Brook Vineyard is also planned. The next day, Targa Turismo heads north-east from Launceston to the East Coast through a rich patchwork quilt farming landscape to Weldborough Pass (another Targa stage) and down through St Helens to Coles Bay. Wednesday has been set aside as a rest day. Based out of Freycinet, participants can enjoy a walk along the sparkling white beach, take a hike among the imposing granite peaks or avail themselves of an optional cruise on the spectacular Wineglass Bay. Or, just kick back. On Thursday, it will be time for the two groups of participants to split. Those driving the Targa Turismo fleet will return to Hobart in time to catch flights home around lunch time, while those driving their own classic will journey to Devonport in time to catch the Spirit of Tasmania to Melbourne. What a week! Targa Turismo inclusions: • Six nights deluxe accommodation (two nights at each of Wrest Point Hotel Hobart/Launceston Country Club Resort/ Freycinet Lodge) including full breakfast daily. • Six days guided driving of Tasmania using a full choice of cars provided (Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Mini) over the six days (drivers get to swap around at regular intervals to try all marques -- insurance included) OR return travel Melbourne to Devonport on the Spirit of Tasmania (includes overnight cabin accommodation and space to bring your own classic car). • Four sumptuous dinners. • Hobart welcome lunch, Moorilla Estate winery lunch (Source Restaurant) including wine tastings and entry to MONA (Museum of Old and New Art).
