WWW.ROADAHEAD.COM.AU 20 THE ROAD AHEAD OCT/NOV 2011 HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS OR NEED HELP? CONTACT GIZMO ON 1300 275 449. check out: smarter smartphones It’s easy to be organised on the go. An in-built Navigon system transforms the phone into a premium navigation device, while Social Hub Premium brings together email and social networking sites on one convenient screen. The phone’s Reader’s Hub provides access to more than 2.2 million eBooks, 2300 magazines and 2000 newspapers. www.samsung.com.au AT PRESS TIME, Apple was yet to officially disclose any information on the new iPhone5. Speculation has been rife, with fans and experts alike weighing in with their predictions. Like its predecessor, the iPhone5 will have the most sensitive touch screen among its competitors. It’s expected to be powered on an A5 processor and feature a new operating system platform that enables the user to work on multiple applications at the same time. www .apple.com.au HOME COMPUTERS WITH GIZMO MAKING FULL USE OF WI-FI ON YOUR 3G SMARTPHONE If you’ve got a smartphone and a data plan, making full use of the internet when you’re out and about needn’t chew up your data plan and potentially incur additional charges. To prevent this from happening, you can make full use of the Wi-Fi that is available around you instead of your 3G data plan. If you’re at home, let your smartphone automatically switch to use your home Wi-Fi (the signal will also be faster and stronger, giving you better connectivity). To do this (for an iPhone): go to Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi > then enter your home network details including passwords. Once you’ve done this, it will automatically pick up the Wi-Fi signal each time you walk into your house without your smartphone having to prompt you. When you’re on the move, see what ‘hotspots’ are available. What’s a hotspot? It’s an area where Wi-Fi access is available. If you want to be notified when you’re in a hotspot area (for an iPhone); go to Settings> Wi-Fi> and then ensure ‘Ask to Join Networks’ is switched to ‘On’. If a hotspot is available, you’ll notice next to the hotspot name, e.g . ‘John’s Place’, there will either be a padlock, or not. If there is a padlock, you won’t be able to access the hotspot without knowing the password. If there’s no padlock ... the internet is yours to use. At any time, you can see whether you’re using Wi-Fi or 3G on the top of your phone’s screen. WITH BUILT-IN ADOBE Flash Player support, no website is out of bounds on the HTC Desire HD. Featuring HD video recording and an 8 MP dual flash camera, the HTC Desire HD can stream photos, videos and music straight from the phone to a home theatre system. www.htc.com LIFESTYLE TECH + GADGETS RA_October-November_2011 PG03-21_Lifestyle.indd 20 20/09/11 9:53 AM
