The Road Ahead : February March 2012

MAKES YOUR DAY FEB/MAR 2012 THE ROAD AHEAD 13 It's Apple & Grape Harvest F time again on the Granite Be THE GRANITE BELT region is one of the richest food producing regions in the state, home to a multi-million dollar horticultural and agricultural sector as well as a modern and highly-awarded wine industry. The region's northerly latitude and elevation high on the Great Dividing Range combine to produce intensely- flavoured apples, pears and stone fruit, with the cool weather and decomposed granite soils creating ideal conditions for wine grape growing as well as a wide variety of other produce. The richness of local produce is also fertile ground for the growth of a strong food industry, with providores and restaurants making the most of the region's best produce with a focus on 'nude food' -- produce that's eaten in region and in season. The region's wine industry continues to grow with more than 40 boutique cellar doors open to visitors. The Strange Bird Alternative Wine Trail allows visitors to uncover some of the alternative varieties of wine grown in the region. The biennial Apple & Grape Harvest Festival, held March 2 to 4, 2012, is a major tourist drawcard with more than 40,000 visitors converging on the region for the iconic harvest celebration. The free event includes a grand parade and street carnival, food and wine fiesta, live entertainment and street stalls and rides.
