Then, on our stopover in Auckland, we take the option of yet another coach trip, a delightful three-hour drive to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. At the epicentre of this geological phenomenon is the 'Cathedral', an acoustically-perfect, natural auditorium that has resonated to the voices of the Vienna Boys Choir and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. But the piece-de-resistance proves to be a gentle cruise in the darkness in an open boat down an underground stream among the limestone formations, where the ceiling is a canopy alive with the fluorescent blue-green glow of thousands and thousands of glow worms. This is nature at its most spectacular. With the land component of the cruise sadly completed, the focus returns to life and times onboard. The Sun Princess is the real deal, having some 975 well-appointed staterooms, with almost half offering private balconies, among its accommodation. There's plenty of wow factor, none more so than when you walk into the imposing, central, four-storey atrium. Add on seven lounges and bars, a 550-seat theatre that features live performances and movie screenings, a spa and fitness centre, Sanctuary retreat, a poolside Movies Under the Stars screen on the top deck and four pools and you couldn't want for more. 'Foodies' fear not, there are eight restaurants and cafes that cater for all tastes. Dining is not without a touch of glamour to complement the superb a la carte menu (that changes daily) and attentive waiter service; on our seven nights on board, there were two evenings where formal attire was the dress standard. Of course, I've only given you half the story. Having boarded the Sun Princess in Wellington, we missed the first part of the voyage from Brisbane that took in the stunning scenery of the south island: Fiordland (where the ship sails into Milford Sound), Dunedin and Akaroa. So why not complete the picture yourself? There is a range of 14-night roundtrip cruises from Brisbane to New Zealand from next October to April 2013, with fares from $1699* per person twin share (subject to availability, *conditions apply).
