The Road Ahead : February March 2012
WWW.ROADAHEAD.COM.AU THE ROAD AHEAD FEB/MAR 2012 36 TRAVEL DRIVE HOLIDAY LUXURY usually something you associate with a driving holiday, yet the only way to see the best parts of south-east Queensland is by road. Graham Turner and wife Jude recognised a need to combine the two, thereby giving people the opportunity to see everything the great south-east has to offer without compromising style, comfort and luxury. "We really felt there was something missing in the Australian market," Spicers Retreats, Hotels and Lodges owner Jude Turner said. "We wanted to create private but spacious retreats where everything was easily available onsite -- great food and wine, day spa treatments, cooking schools and outdoor activities -- but without feeling like a large, impersonal hotel." According to Mrs Turner, all six of Spicers Queensland properties are designed to provide the individuality, service and privacy of a bed and breakfast with the style, quality and luxury standards of a grand international hotel. Each property is also located within a two-hour drive from Brisbane. "We've designed each property to be a unique experience of its location by making the best of the environment and bringing the outside in," Mrs Turner said. "As most of our retreats have less than 20 rooms, they feel like a really intimate, special home-away-from-home where our guests can truly relax and feel cared for." Just an hour's drive from Brisbane is Spicers Hidden Vale, comprising 30 fully-restored, heritage cottages that have been converted to luxurious guest suites overlooking the picturesque Lockyer Valley. Hidden Vale offers country hospitality right on Brisbane's doorstep. Two hours' drive south-west of Brisbane in the Scenic Rim is Spicers Peak Lodge. Perched high on a mountain plateau, Peak Lodge won Best Luxury Accommodation at the 2010 and 2011 Queensland To u rism Awards. At the base of the mountain sits Spicers Canopy, which offers an eco 'glamping' experience without sacrificing comfort. Further north in Montville, set on nine hectares of rolling hills and gardens in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, is the French-inspired Spicers Clovelly Estate. French cooking classes, luxurious treatments at the day spa and gourmet picnics are all in a day's 'work' at Clovelly Estate. Spicers Tamarind Retreat in Maleny offers a rejuvenating experience with its lush rainforest setting and Thai-inspired styling. Here guests can feast on innovative Asian cuisine in The Tamarind restaurant, recently awarded Best New Restaurant on the Sunshine Coast, take a Thai cooking class or soak their stress away in the new day spa. Spicers Balfour Hotel offers a unique boutique experience in the heart of Brisbane. Located in the suburb of New Farm, the hotel looks like a classic- renovated Queenslander on the outside, but inside is a contemporary hotel with all the finest luxuries. Life might be about the journey, not the destination, but when it comes to exploring south-east Queensland you can have the best of both. add some spicers to your holiday STORY DEB ECCLESTON For more information about Spicers properties go to www. spicersgroup. com.au or phone 1300 197 660.
