WWW.ROADAHEAD.COM.AU THE ROAD AHEAD APR/MAY 2012 20 STREAMING MOVIES FROM YOUR COMPUTER Have a bunch of movies sitting on your computer that you'd love to watch on your TV instead of the computer? Then time to start streaming. Unclear on what streaming is? Streaming sends data (a movie) from one device (a computer) to another (a TV), without having to create a replica copy of the data onto your TV. You'll need a device that stores and makes the data available for streaming (computer) and another device (Xbox or PS3) to play the content. Both devices need to be connected to the same network and able to talk to each other. If you are a Windows 7 user, simply enable HomeGroup. It'll tell your computer that your movie can be shared and starts sharing for you using DLNA protocol (that's a whole other article). The compatible device connected to your TV will see the content on the computer, allowing you to play it back via the Xbox or PS3 on the big screen. If you're a Mac user, or purchase content from iTunes, it will contain Digital Rights Management (DRM), so it won't play per the scenario above. You will need to purchase an Apple TV and connect it to your TV, allowing the DRM content that is stored on your Mac, or content rented directly from iTunes, to stream. The best way to start is to have a technician check out which devices you already have, how you're using them and then apply the right solution for you. Have more questions or need help?
