Celebrity MasterClass There are plenty of must- see attractions, including the Warradjan Cultural Centre and Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) and nearby Katherine Gorge. to Jim Jim Falls, and the ground proved quite uneven as we followed the creek towards our destination. The view at the end made it all worthwhile: magnificent falls toppling down from the huge, gorge walls, dropping into the large, inky- coloured pool beneath. This pool was croc free and, seeing others enjoying themselves, I jumped in for a refreshing (or rather icy cold) swim. I found a like-minded adventurer and, together, we swam to the centre and turned on our backs to look up where the giant walls seemed to reach for the sky. Another highlight was the Yellow Water Cruise at Cooinda. Even with the humming of the boat motor, the billabong was so quiet and peaceful. The variety of birdlife was astounding, with around 60 different species found on this billabong, including whistling ducks, magpie geese, kingfishers and even jabiru. They all went about their business as we glided by unnoticed. The crocodiles also seemed unfazed by the passing boat and continued to laze on the banks or submerged in the water with just their eyes eerily peering out. The cruise ended with a striking sunset, made all the more vivid by smoke from a nearby burn-off. There are plenty of other must-see attractions in this area, including the Warradjan Cultural Centre and Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) and nearby Katherine Gorge and Litchfield National Park, but for me, it was on to the Stuart Highway and back to Darwin. Kakadu National Park offers many amazing sights and experiences at any time of the year. Accessibility does vary between the seasons and many sights are located down dirt roads only accessible by 4WD. An entry fee, reintroduced in 2010, is required to enter the park. The pass, valid for 14 days, costs $25 per person for ages 16 years and older. It can be purchased online, at various locations in Darwin and within the park itself. If you decide to let someone else do all the hard work and join a guided tour, your itinerary will be designed around the seasonal accessibility and the entry pass organised by your guide. RACQ Travel can assist with your Kakadu holiday, whatever your preference.
