The Road Ahead : June July 2012
WWW.ROADAHEAD.COM.AU 54 THE ROAD AHEAD JUN/JUL 2012 MOTORING AIRPORTLINK IT'S A ROAD paved with promise. The highly-anticipated Airportlink -- a 6.7 km toll road connecting the CBD to Brisbane Airport -- is predicted to reduce travel times for some commuters by up to 88 percent. Privately funded by BrisConnections to the tune of $4.8 billion, Airportlink was designed and built by Thiess John Holland in direct response to Brisbane's strong population and economic growth. In the past the city's transport network has not grown in line with the population, resulting in increasing congestion on the roads, according to BrisConnections CEO Dr Ray Wilson. "Brisbane experienced unprecedented growth in the past 20 years with warmer weather, cheaper costs of living and more affordable property prices attracting an influx of international and interstate immigrants," Dr Wilson said. "However, by the time we reached the end of the last decade, this astonishing growth resulted in traffic congestion that was literally stifling the city, so much so that Brisbane City Council estimated that it was costing businesses and residents about $1.3 billion per year in productivity losses." Connecting with the CLEM7 Tunnel, Inner City Bypass and local road networks, travel time savings of up to 20 minutes in peak hour could be achieved on some road journeys using Airportlink, according to Dr Wilson. A comparison study that tested travel times on Airportlink against a number of alternative surface routes demonstrated that Airportlink reduced travel times by as much as 88 percent, he said. The study was conducted using multiple vehicles fitted with advanced, in-vehicle GPS units to drive all of the alternative routes in real-life driving conditions. Following the recommended tunnel speeds of 60 km/h for ramps and 80 km/h in the tunnel, the vehicles build it and they will come STORY DEB ECCLESTON Commuting through Brisbane's northern suburbs is tipped to be a whole lot easier once Airportlink opens in August.
