REVIEWS BY BARRY GREEN AND JOHN EWING. honda odyssey my12 Honda's seven-seater Odyssey 2012 models feature cosmetic changes plus extra standard equipment and price reductions. The standard grade we tested is now $2000 cheaper. Touch- screen satellite navigation, reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming, iPod integration and DVD player are now standard on all models. Odyssey remains one of the most car-like people movers to drive, graced with a supple ride and, by class standards, a surprisingly nimble and confident level of handling. It's a willing enough performer, too. A spacesaver spare and poorly-located child restraint points get the thumbs down. KEY STATS MLP: $37,100 SAFETY: Dual front/side/curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution, brake assist, electronic stability and traction controls. KEY FEATURES: Climate-control airconditioning, 16" alloys, navigation with CD/DVD tuner and live traffic updates, Bluetooth with audio streaming, reversing camera. ENGINE: 2.4-litre, i-VTEC petrol, 4-cyl. ANCAP CRASH RATING: N/A. vw scirocco r Under the striking looks of Scirocco's three-door body is a 2.0-litre, direct- injection turbo-petrol engine as used in sibling Golf R. The engine's strong and energetic response is accompanied by a nice bass note from the exhaust. Ride is taut and mostly tolerable around town, but its abilities to soothe out and soak up the pitting of many roads beyond the urban fringes are found wanting. Praise, though, for the sporty dynamics with excellent grip levels, flat cornering stance, excellent steering and a solidly- planted feeling. Scirocco is a four-seater and rear cabin space is tight. Visibility to the rear is hampered by the broad pillars and letter-box slot back glass. KEY STATS MLP: $49,990 (six- spd DSG) SAFETY: Dual front/side/curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, electronic stability and traction controls. ANCAP CRASH RATING: KEY STATS THE XKR-S IS the flagship of Jaguar's modern high-performance fleet. Though the same weight (1750 kg) and sharing the same powerplant and platform and essentially the same lightweight aluminium body as the XK- R, the XKR-S boasts 30 kW more power and 55 Nm more torque. To maximise performance potential, the suspension spring rates have been increased 28 and 32 percent front and rear, ride height lowered 10 mm and rear lift reduced by 26 percent. Response from the 5.0-litre, supercharged direct fuel injection V8 -- mated to a smooth-shifting ZF six- speed automatic -- is epic in soundtrack and seemingly indefatigable. Thanks to its superbly-engineered chassis and well-sorted suspension, the XKR-S feels alert, keen to turn in and beautifully balanced all the way through each back road corner, shifting attitude subtly in response to every throttle application yet clinging resolutely to the road. Around town, the Jag is equally as impressive in its low-speed tractability and ease of driving. The ride quality, on huge 20" alloys and rubber, is agreeably civilised. From experience, we know Jaguar's stoppers to be consistently the best in the business, the XK-R, for example, pulling up in an average of 21.4 m from 80 km/h. The interior is classy, but not overstated. The XKR-S well justifies its positioning as the current halo car for one of the world's most famous sporting and luxury car marques. jaguar xkr-s coupe MLP: $340,000 SAFETY: Front/side airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution, emergency brake assist, 3-mode dynamic stability control, traction control, tyre pressure sensors.
