ROADAHEAD.COM.AU THE ROAD AHEAD DEC 2012/JAN 2013 16 LIFESTYLE HOME + LIVING THE SHORT LIST There's a simple fact no new parent can deny -- newborn babies really don't do much other than eat, sleep and cry. So don't waste time and money filling the nursery with the latest educational toys designed to stimulate your baby's cerebral cortex until Junior is at least three months old. In the early days, the baby's nursery needs are simple: • A comfortable chair (for you, not the baby). • A quality cot that passes all the Australian safety standards. • A set of drawers. Place a padded change mat on top and voila -- it doubles as a change table. •Alargebinwithalid–fordirty nappies. • A laundry bucket with lid – for soiled baby clothes/cloth nappies. • A cupboard or shelf – to hold the nappies, baby wipes etc. Once you have all this, all that's needed is a little bundle of joy to complete the picture. Welcoming a new addition to the family is a joyous event, but to avoid that 'crowded' feeling it pays to create a space especially for the baby. And it's not just the new parents that need to be prepared. Doting grandparents may also need to modify their home to cater for the pitter-patter of little feet, if the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics are anything to go by. Around a quarter of all children (26 percent) are cared for by their grandparents, an increase of seven percent since the survey was last conducted in 2008. So what's the best way to create a sanctuary for the baby? Firstly, listen to the advice of seasoned parents (and grandparents). They've been there, done that and know what works and what doesn't. Secondly, keep things simple -- choose quality over quantity. Lastly, choose a colour that evokes a feeling of warmth and calm within. And be sure to use a toxin-free paint with zero fumes -- safety should always come before style.
