The Road Ahead : December 2012
45 DEC 2012/JAN 2013 THE ROAD AHEAD GREAT ESCAPE TRAVEL and hear tales of some of the 10,000 fortune-seekers who flooded here in the mid-19th century. Continuing along the Wheelbarrow Way, you'll come to the Lappa Range. At the top are a whistle-stop train station and the remains of the Espanol Hotel. The dilapidated pub is run by a larrikin known as the 'Yappa from Lappa' who invites passers-by to pull up a bar stool as long as they BYO drinks. The 1901 hotel features round timbers and corrugated iron typical of bush pubs of the day, along with an array of outback flotsam and jetsam -- relics, photos and collectibles. Chillagoe is another town built on mineral wealth. Copper, gold, lead and silver were mined here right up until the 1940's. Take a self-guided walk or drive around the abandoned mine site, which is now an open-air museum dominated by the chimney stacks of the old smelter. Underground treasure of a different kind can be discovered at the nearby Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park. Several local operators lead tours into the network of ancient limestone caves. To find out more, drop into The Hub, Chillagoe's tourist information centre. But wait, there's more ... Queensland has plenty of other tourist tracks to inspire an extended driving holiday. Take the Bruce Highway north from Brisbane to discover the beauty of the Fraser Coast. Time your adventure with whale-watching season and spend a few days in Hervey Bay, then factor in a detour to unspoiled Fraser Island before continuing north to Bundaberg. Visit the city's famous rum distillery, see baby turtles on the march at Mon Repos or catch a day cruise to the coral-fringed lagoon of lovely Lady Musgrave Island, on the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. Pack your prospecting pan and head west along the Capricorn Highway from Rockhampton to explore the Central Highlands and beyond. See Emerald's grand old railway station, take a sapphire fossicking tour at Rubyvale or snag some redclaw in Fairbairn Dam. Continue onto Barcaldine to stand in the shade of the Tree of Knowledge memorial and visit the Workers' Heritage Centre. Longreach is just an hour further west -- home to the Qantas Founders' Museum and the Stockman's Hall of Fame. Don't miss a sunset cruise on the Thomson River. * Terms and conditions apply.
