The Road Ahead : December 2012
ROADAHEAD.COM.AU 72 THE ROAD AHEAD DEC 2012/JAN 2013 countdown to safety Brisbane City Council has installed Pedestrian Countdown Timers (PCT) at five intersections in the CBD. PCT's display how many seconds pedestrians have left to safely finish crossing the road once the red 'Don't Walk' pedestrian signal starts flashing. Road rules are simple for pedestrians crossing the road at an intersection with pedestrian signals: only enter the road when a green pedestrian signal is shown (green man figure). Do not enter the road when a flashing red or red pedestrian signal is shown. If the green pedestrian signal changes to flashing red or red while you are crossing the road, don't stay on the road for longer than is necessary. SLIPPERY WHEN WET Drivers need to exercise caution driving on wet roads during the summer storm season. To ensure a safe journey, motorists should: • Slow down and leave at least four seconds distance between their car and the one in front. • Reduce cornering speeds, brake carefully and accelerate slowly. • Turn the headlights on while driving. • Avoid driving through flooded roads and find a safer alternative route. • Use the fan or airconditioning to demist a foggy windscreen. • Delay the journey or avoid driving if it’s not essential. making life easier DID YOU KNOW you cannot drive a vehicle in Queensland which displays L or P plates unless you are a learner or provisional driver or an accredited driver trainer? If you are a learner driver, you must hold a learner driver licence and be supervised by someone who has held an open driver licence for the class of vehicle you are learning to drive for at least a year. You must also have L plates fitted to the front and rear of the vehicle you are driving or, if the vehicle is a motorcycle, have L plates fitted to the rear of the motorcycle. If you drive a vehicle displaying red P plates you are required to hold a P1 provisional licence. If you drive a vehicle which displays green P plates, you are required to hold a P2 provisional licence. The L&P plates displayed on vehicles or motorbikes driven by learner or provisional drivers must be visible for a distance of 20 metres away. L & P plates must be removed from the vehicle when it is not being driven by the learner or provisional licence holder. If you drive a vehicle which displays L or P plates and you are not a learner or provisional licence holder or accredited driver trainer such as a driving school instructor, you commit a traffic offence and are at risk of being issued with an infringement notice. The penalty for these offences is a $176 fine and two licence demerit points.
