The Road Ahead : April May 2007
TRAVEL & LEISURE Australia's defence features prominently in the news these days, but who would have thought that one of the Toowoomba region's significant tourist attractions would be a facility adjoining the militar y's Oakey Airfield. The airfield is home to Tiger, Blackhawk, Iroquois and Kiowa helicopters, and Super King Air aircraft. Next door, you can immerse yourself in militar y aviation histor y at the Museum of Australian Army Flying. Wander among the well-preser ved aircraft in the hangar, and check out the militar y memorabilia. The aircraft include a Bristol Boxkite (1914 trainer), which featured in the film Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. You can also see Sioux, Kiowa and Iroquois helicopters, a Bird Dog (used for low level reconnaissance in Vietnam), an Auster MkIII and several others. Oakey is 31 km west of Toowoomba. The museum opens daily ($5 for adults, concessions apply). Jondar yan, 14 km fur ther west, is home to Australia's oldest operating woolshed (built in 1859). The Jondar yan Woolshed Museum and Park features historic buildings, machiner y and equipment, and countr y lifestyle demonstrations (on weekends). It opens from Wednesday to Sunday (entr y from $9 for adults, concessions apply). Just up the road you'll find the delightful St Anne's Anglican Church. Built in 1859, it's said to be the oldest, gothic-style, ver tical slab timber church in Australia. A little south, at Mt Tyson, pop into the old dair y co-op building for a spot of mischief --- White Mischief, that is. White Mischief is a boutique confectioner y producer and coffee shop, well known for its soft Italian nougat, handmade chocolates and cakes. Governor's Choice Winer y is 24 km east of here. The cellar door (open weekends) is housed in the relocated Springside Primar y School building (circa 1880), which is used for tastings and functions. All the wine is produced from the estate's own grapes. Varieties include chardonnay, verdelho and shiraz (bottles $15 to $25). Governor's Choice cafe is open on weekends (including dinner on Saturday). There are two nice cottages on site as well. Hillview Galler y and Gifts is just up the road (open Fridays and weekends). Morning and afternoon teas (light lunches by appointment) are available. Gift shop offerings include ar t, STORY & PHOTOS JIM MATHERS THE TOOWOOMBA REGION OFFERS A GOOD VARIETY OF ATTRACTIONS.
