RACQ Approved Repairers TORQUING POINT WITH JOHN EWING Trapped children The Club's road ser vice patrols were called to unlock more than 100,000 cars last year. Approximately 1600 of these lockouts involved either children or pets being locked in the vehicle. Recent media repor ts have highlighted the possible tragic consequences of such a situation due to heat stress. Cabin temperatures rise quickly, with peak temperatures of around 50°C on a typical Brisbane winter day and 75°C in summer. Significantly, around 50 percent of the temperature rise occurs in the first five minutes and 80 percent in the first 15 minutes. Probably the most common cause of locked in children is parents giving the child in the car the key to play with. The parent isn't in the car and, before you know it, they are locked out and the child is locked in by small, playful fingers unknowingly triggering the door locks via the remote locking control. Our patrols encounter other scenarios, but a common element is the keys being momentarily put down in the cabin or boot, typically while kids and gear are loaded. The exact sequence of events from there varies, but the result is the kids and keys are locked in and parents star t to panic. Unlocked cars in the home garage can also be a tempting playground for children. Should they inadver tently manage to lock the car, they could be trapped, possibly for extended periods until they are discovered. The improved security of modern cars can make gaining entr y a ver y difficult task for not only the criminal element but also our patrols and emergency ser vices personnel. Access may prove time-consuming and on some models may only be possible by causing expensive-to-repair damage to the vehicle. Even breaking windows may be par ticularly hard due to use of high- strength glass in some models. Time is of the essence and RACQ places a high priority on getting a patrol to a call-out involving children locked in cars. But prevention is better than cure, so keep hold of those keys at all times, don't put them down in the car and remember, they aren't suitable 'enter tainment' for the young 'uns. If you'd like some technical advice, visit racq.com or call RACQ's Technical Advisor y Ser vice on 3666 9148 or 1800 623 456 (members in countr y areas). "Time is of the essence ..."
