Suzy scales down Suzuki has added a cheaper SX4 hatch to its line-up. The manual GLX SX4 has a list price of $21,990, or $23,990 for the four-speed automatic, $2400 under the higher specification Z Series launched earlier in the year. Although only 1.4 litres in capacity, the TSI Twincharger has direct fuel injection, a supercharger and a turbocharger. VW says it all adds up to produce the characteristics of an engine between 2.3 and 2.5 litres in capacity, and we're inclined to agree. In simple terms, a mechanically driven supercharger operates at low revs to produce immediate pulling power, both systems then operate in tandem until 3500 rpm, when the turbo takes over and runs unassisted all the way to a 7000 rpm redline. Peak outputs are 125 kW at 6000 rpm and 240 Nm at 1750-4000 rpm respectively, while the official fuel figure is 7.7 litres per 100 km. and VW Australia will determine whether to introduce TSI engines in other vehicles based on customer response. Dodging around Ram's head brand Dodge has doubled its model line-up with the arrival of a mid-size SUV range to join the Caliber car variants. The Nitro comes in two models, seven paint colours, two interior trims and a choice of petrol and diesel engines. The trademark crosshair grille fits with the wild American styling. For now, the TSI engine is only to be found in a spor ty, new, five-door Golf GT, lowered like a GTI but with softer suspension settings and a high level of safety, comfor t and hot-hatch gear. Prices star t at $34,990 for a manual and hit $37,290 for the DSG gearbox. More than 400 GTs will be impor ted The 3.7-litre, V6 petrol engine and four- speed auto combo is a revised version of that used in Jeep Cherokee, while the four-cylinder, 2.8-litre turbo-diesel with five-speed auto transmission is new to Australia. The 4WD system is par t time, with drive normally to the rear wheels. Prices star t at $36,990 for an SX and $39,990 for the SXT. The optional diesel engine adds $3,500 to either. To sweeten the deal, Dodge is providing the first two years of comprehensive insurance for free. The GLX still has the car's signature 'intelligent' driving system that can be used in two-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive or auto modes. Its equipment levels include dual airbags, airconditioning, power windows and mirrors, trip computer and on-steering wheel audio controls. Twin peaks The people's car company has unveiled an engine with the works, the Twincharger, which has ever y chance of changing the design of future petrol engines.
