The Road Ahead : February 2013
ROADAHEAD.COM.AU THE ROAD AHEAD FEB/MAR 2013 22 "I SEE THE potential there to make Queensland Ballet one of the elite ballet companies in the world." These are words that might ordinarily be just that -- words -- except that they are spoken with quiet determination by a man who has shaped his very life around realising potential and then making great things happen. Meet Li Cunxin (pronounced Lee Shwin Sing), Queensland Ballet's (QB) artistic director. Anyone who has read his autobiographical blockbuster book, Mao's Last Dancer, or seen the Bruce Beresford feature film of the same name, knows what a truly extraordinary human being Li is. Similarly, those who have heard him tell the story of his incredible journey -- from growing up in impoverished rural China to a world-class dancer on the ballet stage -- during one of his public speaking addresses to the corporate world, cannot help but be powerfully moved and inspired. What comes across in all these three mediums is his love of life, ability to endure and overcome, and passion for perfection. Little wonder the local performing arts community is aflutter with anticipation and expectation after his appointment last July, this from among more than 40 applicants worldwide.
