Tips for greener motoring The amount of fuel a car uses is directly related to the amount of greenhouse gas emissions it produces. Reducing the amount of fuel you use not only saves you money but also helps the environment. Here are some tips to help you save fuel and emissions: What car you drive • Choose the smallest, most fuel- efficient car that suits your needs. • Compare fuel consumption information using www.greenvehicleguide. gov.au or the labels on new car windscreens. • Consider the higher fixed, annual and operating costs of buying a larger car. How you drive • Where safely possible, cruise at a reduced 90 km/h. • Minimise accelerating and braking. • Change up through the gears as soon as practical. • Don't warm up or idle your engine. • Fill your fuel tank only to the first click of the fuel nozzle. • Keep your tyre pressure up to the recommended figure. • Use air conditioning only when necessar y. • Remove unnecessar y weight and roof racks. • Ser vice your car regularly. Where, when and how often you drive • When your household has more than one car, use the one which is most fuel- efficient. • Choose local, close destinations where possible. • Use the RACQ trip planner at racq.com to find the shor test route. • Car pool with others and do a number of errands at one time to reduce the number of trips. • Avoid driving in peak hour congestion.
