The Road Ahead : February March 2008
Greener motoring WITH IAN GILLESPIE RACQ CHIEF EXECUTIVE Iam proud to repor t that the RACQ has been working with the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) and other affiliated clubs to develop a strong climate change policy. The policy sets the framework for an ongoing campaign by RACQ and other clubs to keep mobility sustainable in the face of the acknowledged need for motorists, along with other community sectors, to address climate change. Your club first adopted a formal position on climate change in June 2007, with member feedback indicating the great majority accepted that human activity was contributing to climate change. While the new national policy is to be launched this month, the RACQ has already made some key decisions and taken some impor tant steps to ensure not only that we can help members reduce the environmental impacts of their driving, but also demonstrate through practical measures our corporate commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. "...corporate commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions." perspective Our online EnviroCar, launched on racq.com last year to provide a range of fuel and emission-reduction tips, will be progressively complemented by other initiatives to help you make more environmentally informed vehicle purchase and driving choices. I am also pleased to announce that the deliver y of some one million roadside assistance calls to members annually will become carbon neutral as of March 1. We under take to purchase carbon offsets to cover the total greenhouse gas emissions produced by our road ser vice fleet throughout Queensland, including more than 700 corporate and contractor vehicles. Of course, carbon offsets are only a first step, and, with the guidance of a corporate environmental audit that is currently being finalised, we shall also be reviewing emissions from our vehicle fleet and all other RACQ operations, with a view to reducing our carbon footprint over time. Expect us also to repor t to you progressively on what we are doing to encourage governments and the automotive industr y to provide more incentives and oppor tunities for motorists to reduce emissions.
