The Road Ahead : February March 2008
I've cruised on the Yangtse river in China and the Danube in Europe. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, I really love this style of holiday. My first tip is to pack half what you would like to take in your suitcase. If you try to cater for all occasions and activities, you'll need two suitcases, so pack frugally and leave space for those bargain buys. Take clothes you can mix and match. Talk to your travel consultant about likely weather conditions. That way you can plan to layer your clothes each day, depending on what you're doing. Take shoes you can walk in. High heels are out, although some ladies still think they can negotiate the cobbled streets of some of Europe's mediaeval towns in high-fashion footwear. It's nice on board for a formal dinner, but that's all. If you're thinking about a Yangtse cruise, but don't know what sort of food to expect, don't worry. On the boat, there's usually a nice selection of western-style dishes, but when you're not cruising, be careful what you eat. Make sure you consult your GP or Travel Medical Centre for advice on travel tips Save on UK cruises P&O Cruises has released details of three ships sailing from Brisbane to Southampton in the UK, or vice versa early in 2009. Arcadia, Aurora and Oriana all offer generous early booking savings (subject to availability), with up to 50 percent off the 2009 line voyage prices if you book and pay a deposit by April 30, 2008. Plus, you'll have onboard credit of around $900 per person (subject to currency exchange rates). The ships also visit Sydney and Melbourne, so RACQ can book friends or family living interstate to join our members on the cruises, which take around six to eight weeks, depending on whether the voyage is via the Pacific and Panama Canal, or South-East Asia and the Indian Ocean. RACQ Travel is the number one travel agency in Queensland for P&O Cruises. Call 1300 888 449 for your free brochure with full details of member savings on these exciting cruises from Brisbane. Territory in town RACQ Travel, in conjunction with the Northern Territory Tourism Commission, Territory Discoveries and AAT Kings Tours is staging nine 'look before you book' presentations to give members all the latest information on fly- drive deals, short breaks, quality coach tours and rail holidays on The Ghan. If you've not yet booked your 2008 NT holiday, make a note of these locations and dates: Maroochydore (February 19, evening), Brisbane central (February 20, evening), Brisbane north (February 25, morning), Redlands (February 26, morning), Brisbane South (February 27, morning), Ipswich (February 27, evening), Robina (March 4, morning), Toowoomba (March 4, evening) and Bundaberg (March 11, evening). Call 1300 888 449 for details of venues and start times. Solar eclipse, Trans-Siberia There was a remarkable level of interest from members enquiring about a solar eclipse tour to North Africa in the April 2005 Road Ahead, so we believe a new tour to Russia in July 2008, for the eclipse at Novosibirsk, will be of interest. The eclipse will be the major attraction, but the 17-day tour also travels on the Trans-Siberia Railway from Vladivostok on Russia's Pacific coast to St Petersburg on the Baltic, via Lake Baikal, the Urals and Moscow. This interesting tour includes takes in the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, Red Square, St Basil's Cathedral, and the famous GUM Department Store. In St Petersburg, you'll visit the Hermitage and the Summer Palace, built by Peter the Great. Its gardens are modelled on those at the palace at Versailles, near Paris. Call one of our friendly consultants on 1300 888 449 for a free brochure on this special tour. It will be fully escorted from Brisbane. travel diary WITH RACQ TRAVEL WITH LIZ FRAMPTON RACQ TRAVEL, TOWNSVILLE what to take for stomach upsets and related problems. Finally, you'll be on a cruise boat, but one that's much smaller than many of the ocean-going ships, so don't expect Las Vegas-style stage shows and a wide range of social activities. Members can call Liz Frampton on 4725 5677, or email liz.frampton@racq. com.au to book an exciting river cruise.
