The Road Ahead : June 2013
ROADAHEAD.COM.AU 10 THE ROAD AHEAD JUN/JUL 2013 BOB MCKAY'S SILVER Aston Martin DB5 has most things you would expect of the iconic car made famous in the James Bond classic Goldfinger -- except the machine guns. "Unfortunately, it doesn't have those," the 74-year-old Kenmore car collector said with a laugh. Not surprisingly, the DB5 is also missing the passenger ejector seat. But that doesn't dim its brilliance. The DB5 is just one of 15 sleek and exotic cars in Bob's collection. And it's not the only Aston Martin that the avid car enthusiast and restorer owns. "I have three Astons. I own a DB4, a DB6 Mark 2 and the DB5, of course," he said. "I just love them. I used to race cars, and I often competed against Aston Martins. I remember one time I was driving an E-Type Jaguar at Phillip Island and I realised just how impressive the Aston Martins were -- and still are." But this particular DB5, now restored to gleaming perfection, wasn't always the masterpiece it is today. "It took me two years of constant work to get the DB5 into the mint condition it's in now," Bob said. "I bought it as a partly restored car in boxes. I put new front and rear windscreens on it and had the interior re-upholstered to match the original DB5." While there is no denying restoring cars is a big part of his life, Bob's one true love is his wife of 50 years, Merryl. "She'd say I love the cars more than her," Bob said with a cheeky grin. "She's very tolerant of me and the cars. My wife and my family are the most important things to me."
