The Road Ahead : June July 2008
JUN/JLY 08 31 show is held most Friday nights. Yeppoon is not far from Rockhampton, and my travels lead me beyond here to Waterpark Eco Tours, bordering the By? eld National Park. This is a beautiful spot. A horsedrawn carriage takes visitors for a tour of the tea tree plantation, with the stunning By? eld Ranges as a backdrop. Often referred to as a ‘medicine kit in a bottle’, owners Jordan and Claudie explained the process of harvesting, extracting and distilling the tea tree oil. Also included is a quiet cruise in Water Dance along Waterpark Creek. Avid watchers of fauna and ? ora won’t leave disappointed. Nearby Keppel Bay Marina, at Rosslyn Bay, is a modern complex that caters for all boaties’ needs. It’s also home to the many sailing craft that cruise the waters around the Keppel Bay Islands. Chill out and taste some of the ? ne fare at Waterline. Breakfast at this award-winning waterfront cafe, bar and restaurant was fresh, tasty and reasonably priced. Freedom Fast Cat Ferry operates from Pier One, Rosslyn Bay Harbour to Great Keppel Island as a ferry service and for day tours. The ferries operate every day except Mondays. Keppel Bay Escapes operates a one-stop-shop of sailing excellence. Whether you fancy yourself as a skipper, perhaps want to learn the ? ner details of sailing or are interested in a ? shing or group charter, they can accommodate your wishes. My short but enjoyable morning at sea was spent with ‘skippers in training’ Billy and Roger at the helm of ManaKai, a 10.5 m cruising yacht. Life truly doesn’t get any better than smooth sailing conditions; warm, crystal blue water for swimming; an appetizing lunch and no mobile phones. It’s very easy to while away a few days in the Rockhampton region. WHERE TO STAY Motel 98 is located on Victoria Parade, on the banks of the Fitzroy River, and is close to the city centre. For friendly and comfy accommodation, this four-star RACQ-listed motel also houses an award-winning restaurant. If you’re interested in holiday apartments, consider Beaches on Lammermoor. These modern holiday apartments are within easy reach of Yeppoon. Some have ocean views. PLAN AHEAD Bookings are recommended for all activities listed. Minimum numbers may apply.
