features 8 JUN/JLY 08 STORY BARRY GREEN R ACQ members have spoken: more than 360 Queensland roads are not up to standard and something needs to be done about it. This de? nitive response to the RACQ’s latest Unroadworthy Roads Survey is a staggering one-third up on the number of roads nominated in the previous survey in 2005. RACQ executive manager, traf? c and safety, John Wikman said the survey asked respondents to supply information on roads perceived to be in a poor or inadequate condition, un? t for the function they were designed to perform and not providing an acceptable level of service to the road user. “Of the 364 inadequate or substandard roads identi? ed in the survey, 203, or 56 percent, are in country or regional Queensland,” Mr Wikman said. “That emphasis is almost unchanged from the last survey.” Responses were received about unroadworthy roads in 59 local council areas (prior to amalgamation), compared with 52 in the 2005 survey, and in all Main Roads districts throughout Queensland. The most common problems identi? ed were: rough surfaces, poor road shoulders, narrow road/lanes and lack of overtaking opportunities. Other problems nominated consistently included: tight curves/ blind crests, slippery or loose surface, poor drainage, prone to ? ooding and inferior road markings. Beechmont Road, Gold Coast hinterland topped the list of worst state roads and AusLink national network of highways. Locals actively responded about the condition of the road between Lower Beechmont and Beechmont (Tarlington Road to Jardine Road). Respondents complained about a myriad of problems, including the rough surface, tight curves, blind crests and narrow roadway. Poor road shoulders, visibility and drainage, as well as a lack of guard fencing and overtaking opportunities added to the litany of woes. As in the 2005 survey, the national network also rated badly, with ? ve sections of the Bruce Highway in the top 10. These sections comprised Tully to Cairns, Bowen to Townsville, Gympie to Maryborough, Miriam Vale to Marlborough and Cooroy to Gympie. “It is concerning to see a major transport and communication route such as the Bruce Highway coming up time and time again in this survey,” Mr Wikman said. At the head of the top 10 worst local roads was Gap Creek Road, from Kenmore Hills to The Gap, in Brisbane’s north-west. The section includes an unsealed surface that respondents said was slippery and bumpy and particularly bad after wet weather. It also suffers from having tight curves/blind crests, narrow bridge/culvert, poor road shoulders and lighting, and a steep gradient. “We recommend that the Brisbane City Council gets on and does the long-awaited work proposed for Gap Creek Road, as it has ranked highly a number of times in previous surveys,” Mr Wikman said. Also, within Brisbane and surrounds, Illaweena Street from Gowan Road (Calamvale) to Wembley Road (Berrinba) came in for mention at number ? ve among the worst local roads. A busy thoroughfare, it was reported to have a lack of shoulders, streetlights and re? ectors and ? ooded when it rained. An example of a problematic local road in regional areas was Malcomson Street, Mackay, which ranked highly due to its rough, narrow surface, poor road shoulders and poor drainage.
