The Road Ahead Sampler : June July 08 Sample
JUN/JLY 08 9 commented on the badly deteriorated road surface with large potholes. As a sign that remedial work has taken place since the last survey, some roads have dropped off the ‘radar’ in 2008. One example was River Heads Road, leading from the boat ramps to Fraser Island (from Booral and River Heads), which came in for major complaint previously. The Barkly Highway, a poor performer in the 2001 survey, also dropped off, as did Maroochydore Road on the Sunshine Coast. “If people can see work being carried out on the roads they have complained about, it shows that their message for action is getting through to the authorities,” Mr Wikman said. The most common suggested solutions for remedial treatments were: resurface, widen the road or duplicate, improve the road shoulders and more regular road maintenance. Other popular solutions selected by respondents included: rebuild the road alignment, improve the drainage runoff, more overtaking lanes, seal the road and improve the road markings. According to Mr Wikman, RACQ conducts these surveys to give motorists a chance to highlight problem locations. “It was interesting to note that three of their top 10 listed state/ AusLink highways also featured in the top nine from the Club’s recently released Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRap) technical report,” he said. “This reinforces the fact that RACQ members are in tune with the Club’s engineering research.” The roads identi? ed as needing urgent upgrading in both reports were: • Bruce Highway, from Cooroy to Gympie. • D’Aguilar Highway, from Caboolture to Kilcoy. • Kennedy Highway, from Captain Cook Highway to Kuranda. Mr Wikman said the survey showed all levels of government that there was still much to be done to address the backlog in repairs, to maintain existing roads and to improve their standard for future travel needs. “RACQ will continue to lobby the relevant authorities for better roads and asks them to consider our survey results when planning projects,” he said.
