HERE ARE FIVE OF THE BEST... adventure island STORY ROGER ALLNUTT I IMAGES TOURISM TASMANIA CRADLE MOUNTAIN AND THE OVERLAND TRACK Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is one of the most visited parts of Tasmania and the Overland Track is one of the iconic walks in Australia. The park provides vistas of majestic mountain scenery, including Tasmania's highest peak Mt Ossa (1607m). Many visitors concentrate on Cradle Mountain at the northern end of the park, which has some excellent accommodation and a choice of short day walks centred on Dove Lake, with the towering spires of Cradle Mountain forming a spectacular backdrop. The boardwalk around Dove Lake is gentle and suitable for most people, while other walks include Marion's Lookout and Like Lila. Due to the numbers wishing to 'do' the Overland Track (it usually takes five-six days), bookings are required for the October 1 to May 31 period and fees are payable. Check parks.tas.gov.au for conditions and bookings. If you want to do the walk in style and comfort, Cradle Mountain Huts offers guided walks in pleasant accommodation along the way.
