How can you cater to the needs of your pets without your living space resembling the RSPCA? It's easier than you may think. There essentially are five things an animal can't live without -- food, water, shelter, toys and love -- and four of those can wreak havoc on the appearance of your home. Dog owners can overcome the problem by creating a doggy den, which can be as elaborate as a built-in space in the kitchen sideboard or under the stairs, or as simple as a crate under a table. Add a comfortable bed and your dog has a safe retreat hidden from view. Keep your pet's food bowl tucked away until dinner time to prevent food being spilled all over the floor, and be sure to keep kitchen benches clear and cupboards secure, as some foods can be dangerous for dogs and cats. Provide plenty of toys to alleviate boredom (and prevent your shoes being chewed), and keep them tidy but accessible by storing them in a decorative basket. And unless you want your prized lounge to be torn to shreds, be sure to provide your feline friend with a scratching post.
