The Road Ahead : August September 2008
features at home NETWORK In the last edition of The Road Ahead, we introduced gizmo, RACQ’s new computer support partner. Here are some tips about how to get more from your home computer network. A recent home technology study done by Galaxy Research has found that although 70 percent of people have two or more computers at home, 11 percent paid for multiple internet connections when they could have shared one. Also, the study found that 40 percent were unable to share fi les and 36 percent were unable to print from all of their computers. A wireless network would resolve these issues. Many people are turned off the idea of getting a wireless network because they have heard about neighbours or ‘war drivers’ stealing their internet bandwidth, accessing their private documents or worse. While these concerns are valid and important to address, the reality is that they are easy to avoid with some professional help. Wireless networks set up by a highly trained ‘gizmotech’ are encrypted using the strongest encryption your device can support, which leaves you to enjoy the benefi ts safe from security threats. Many people who install a wireless network fi nd they can’t believe they waited so long to take advantage of this popular new technology. Of the services provided by gizmo this year, approximately 34 percent have been networking and interconnectivity related. This indicates that while you could try and set up a home network yourself, most people benefi t from a professional helping hand. Gizmo’s ‘Network Me’ service is designed to make setting up a wireless network as easy as picking up a phone and is a great way to take advantage of the RACQ member discount. A ‘Network Me’ service will allow you to: • Browse the internet from all of your computers simultaneously using a single shared internet connection. This is great if you have a laptop or multiple computers in the house. No more fi ghts over who gets to use the internet. • Share fi les and folders between your computers, allowing you to access fi les stored on one computer from any other. This is a great way of sharing music, videos and work fi les between your computers without needing to burn CDs or use USB drives. • Share a single centralised printer between all of your computers without needing to unplug and swap cables each time you want to print from a different PC. • Do all of these things from anywhere within range of your wireless connection – in the garden, lounge room, kitchen or wherever takes your fancy really.
