STORY & PHOTOS JOHN BRADLEY As we flew above the landscape that surrounds Arequipa, thoughts flashed to mind that the Andes, pocked with the mighty volcanoes of Mt Misti and Mt Picchu Picchu, snow covered, black and brown lipped, looked more like a leftover dessert than the harsh environment it is. We were using Arequipa, 2500 m above sea level, for our acclimatisation to high altitude before making our assault on Cuzco, Machu Picchu and beyond. As we dropped lower, the secrets of the dark green valleys became more evident, then we came to a vantage point near Arequipa. Once settled, our guide whisked us off to Yanahuara Lookout for an overview of the city, and our first encounter with alpacas, tumbo (a knee trembling drink), maccu root to help our memory, and the signature building style of Baroque architecture.
