Seafood is the freshest, but not the only item on the menus at Seashells Cafe at Amity Point and at Point Lookout, Fishes Cafe at the Point, Look Cafe and Tiller's Café Pantry at Allure Resort. On the headland, the Oceanic Gelato and Coffee shop makes the best homemade gelati outside Italy (closed in May). There are modest supermarkets, boutiques, fresh produce and deli at The Green Room and fresh seafood and prawns straight from trawlers at Mal Starkey's Seafood House and The Prawn Shack at Point Lookout and Rufus King at Amity Point. But it's the beaches that have made 'Straddie' so popular. Main Beach, Frenchman's Beach, Deadman's Beach, Cylinder Beach, Home Beach, Flinders Beach -- take your pick and, if salt water's not your thing, bliss out in the lovely, cool, fresh, brown, tea tree waters of Brown Lake near Dunwich. Russell Island is the largest, a relaxed, peaceful place with walking trails and open plains, the Russell Island Wetlands, beautiful views, fishing, kayak tours, a motel and breakfast, lunch and coffee at Aunty Alice's Cafe. Macleay Island has long attracted retirees and artists for its seclusion, fishing and the excellent swimming beach, Dalpura Beach. There's a bowls club, golf course, and hotel. At just 200ha, it's easy walking around compact Lamb Island to enjoy the natural beauty of the pebbly foreshore and the rainforest. Amenities include a swimming enclosure and small shop. Karragarra is the smallest island at just 100ha. It has a sandy beach with a netted swimming enclosure close to the jetty, electric and wood barbeques, picnic tables and shady trees. Tiny Coochiemudlo Island is a 10-minute ferry ride from Victoria Point where you'll find a patrolled beach, boat hire and a convenience store.
