FEATURE | MOTORING THE CLUB'S WEBSITE, racq.com, regularly receives 'hits' from not just Queenslanders turning to our motoring fact sheets for advice, but interstaters and residents of the US, UK, India, South Africa and elsewhere. From 14,313 'hits' in 2008, the response snowballed last year to 838,550. In the same time, the number of fact sheets grew from 38 to 107 and presently stands at 114. RACQ Technical and Safety Policy technical researcher Russell Manning said it was common for 'hits' to 'spike' just after a natural disaster. "That's when people seem to be requiring information -- and fast," Mr Manning said. "After Hurricane Sandy (the second-costliest hurricane in American history) in 2012, we saw a big 'spike' in 'hits' on our flood- damaged vehicles fact sheet, leading to a number of enquiries from the US." One such enquiry read: 'My uncle's Chevy van was inundated with salt water from a tidal surge from Hurricane Sandy in NY (New York). To help him assess the situation, I 'Googled' for help and found this site (racq.com) which provided relevant and clear advice. Only after reading and assimilating the information ... did I discover that the site is located in Australia. Who would have guessed that help came from half a world away? Thanks.' Another major 'spike' happened directly after major flooding in the UK recently. "The fact sheets have received feedback from Germany, Scandinavia, Brazil and The Seychelles," Mr Manning said. "We've had to look up the country code on some emails to see where they're from and have even had to translate some because they're written in another language." Researched, written and administered by the Club's Technical and Safety Policy department, the fact sheets cover such user-relevant topics as buying or selling a car, car accessories, cars and the environment, fuels and oils, general motoring, repairs and maintenance, safer cars and towing. Within a topic, they address subjects as diverse as grey imports, workings of a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), odometer fraud, dealer versus non-dealer servicing and rules about what you can, or can't, tow. Mr Manning said the fact sheets were regularly updated and the number constantly added to. "They're written with an aim to make it easier to understand what can sometimes be complex concepts," he said. fact sheets a 'hit' overseas MOTORISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD ARE TURNING TO THE RACQ FOR HELP TO KEEP THEM ON THE ROAD.
