RUN YOUR EYE over the gleaming contours and chrome detailing of the 1929 Dodge Brothers Sports Roadster and it's easy to understand why Gary Day simply had to acquire it. But to persevere for 21 years to make it your own? Now, that's passion. Gary's relentless pursuit of this rare American vehicle, built towards the end of '29 when the stock market crashed in New York, ushering in the Great Depression, began many years ago when he was an apprentice electrician. Spotting the car at the home of a client, Gary was quick to put in an offer. When the owners didn't want to part with it, Gary offered to maintain it for them, which he did -- for 21 dedicated years -- until the family was ready to sell. Finally coveting his hard-earned prize, Gary considered it too good to restore, until his cat, Kimba, jumped on the roof and fell right through. "That was basically the end of my idea to keep it in its original condition. It was the straw that broke the camel's back," Gary said. After five years of working on the car days, nights and weekends, the Dodge was finally restored to the gleaming splendour it basks in today. Gary and his Dodge have since become regulars at RACQ MotorFest -- building up an impressive collection of awards -- and the 2014 event at Eagle Farm Racecourse on July 13 will be no exception. This year, MotorFest celebrates the 100th anniversary of both Dodge and Italian marque Maserati, as well as the 50th anniversary of the American muscle car, the Ford Mustang. A stunning line-up of around 800 vintage, prestige and rare cars promises a visual feast guaranteed to satisfy even the most discerning of viewers. But dig beneath the dazzling surface and you'll find a rich tapestry of stories about these beautiful vehicles, their histories and their passionate owners. Warwick Williams is another such example. He devoted two solid years to building his replica Monza red 1956 Maserati 250F from scratch. "I've had it for seven years now and the novelty of owning it hasn't worn off -- I love it," Warwick enthused. Dan Bowden, whose father, David, was part of champion Australian race car driver 'Pete' Geoghegan's pit crew in 1965, now shares ownership of the very same Mustang Geoghegan drove to victory in 68 out of 74 races. His father's undying thirst for the American muscle car has rubbed off on Dan, who has helped seek and restore a number of Mustangs which take pride of place among the family's vast collection of iconic cars. "The Mustang is just a beautiful car -- full stop," Dan declared. "They were so competitive here in Australia and they made such an impact, so it's been good to actually find them and bring them back to how they were when they raced." The Bowden family will be showcasing four of their Mustangs, including the Geoghegan race car, at MotorFest this year. While the cars and their owners are without doubt the star attractions on the day, there's much on offer for every member of the family. Roving entertainers, a live jazz band -- Steve Wood and his Splinters -- children's rides, food stalls, fresh produce and craft markets promise to keep everyone thoroughly entertained, on what is arguably Brisbane's most inexpensive day out. The entry fee is $2 per person and free for children under three. All funds raised go to the RACQ rescue helicopter network. Gates open at 10am in the morning, with festivities continuing until 3pm. Four free public car parks surrounding Eagle Farm Racecourse will operate on the day and free shuttle buses will operate between Doomben Racecourse and the MotorFest main entry gate at Eagle Farm Racecourse. In addition, there will be plenty of off- street parking available surrounding the venue. For more information, or to register your car, visit racq.com/motorfest.
