We had no end of people taking shots of it. But, it's the driving experience that truly bares the GT-R's soul and here Nissan's halo car operates at a rarefied level inhabited by only supercars costing two and three times more. All-wheel-drive, fat rubber, electronic 'smarts' and race car-like suspension enables the GT-R to unleash an avalanche of performance from its twin-turbo, 3.8-litre V6 and Araldite it to the bitumen. It launches like a Saturn rocket (0-100km/h in a claimed, ballistic 2.7 seconds) and demolishes a twisty mountain road like few others. The Black Edition is top-of-the-range. In keeping with the moniker, black with red highlighting features prominently throughout the interior, such as on the specially-commissioned Recaro front seats. And there's a carbon fibre rear spoiler and metallic, black forged 20" lightweight alloys. The GT-R has been called the all-conditions supercar, suitable for anyone, anywhere, any time, but we're not convinced. Sure it has a usable boot, and the rear seat can fit two short passengers (read as primary school children), but the ride is uncompromising as an everyday drive -- even with dampers set to the optional COMF (comfort) setting. Take it to a track day, though, and you'll be the proverbial fastest gun in the west. nissan gt-r black edition BG KEY STATS MLP: $182,500^ SAFETY: DFSCA, ABS, EBD, ESC, TC, Brembo six-piston front and four- piston rear brakes. AT $25,990 AND $27,990 (driveaway) for the GX and GXR models respectively, Proton is marketing its Exora people mover as Australia's most affordable seven-seater. This is backed by the only five year/75,000km free servicing offering and a five year/150,000km warranty. The standard equipment is extensive, and on our GXR test vehicle includes leather trim, cruise control, airconditioning for all three rows, a roof-mounted DVD player, radio CD/ MP3 player with bluetooth and USB port, steering-wheel-operated audio and phone controls, alloy wheels and rear fog light. The safety inventory includes dual front and side airbags (front row), front seatbelt pre-tensioners, electronic stability control, traction control, ABS, speed-sensing door locks, reversing sensors and camera. As a 'drive', however, Exora has some way to go to measure up to the best in class. Life's a struggle for the 1.6-litre, turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, mated to a six- speed CVT that uses a belt rather than traditional gears to transmit power to the front wheels, even with just the driver on board or partly loaded. And it's unacceptably noisy to boot. The ride quality is okay, but the seats are hard and flat and need to be more accommodating, particularly the third row pair that also lack headrests. Exora has a four-star safety rating, less than ideal for affordable family transport. proton exora gxr MOTORING | NEW CAR ROAD TEST KEY STATS MLP: $27,990 (driveaway) SAFETY: DFSA (front row), EBD, ESC, TC, ABS, PS, RC, front seat belt pre-tensioners.
