ROADAHEAD.COM.AU 10 THE ROAD AHEAD AUG/SEP 2014 IMAGES: RENEE GRACIE, MCELREA RACING PORSCHE, TERRI IRWIN, BINDI AND TERRI IRWIN. WHEEL WOMAN As well as RACQ Australia Zoom celebrating the greats of Australian motor racing -- the cars and the stars -- the event will also give the public a chance to meet the future of the sport. At just 19, Renee Gracie has been coined as the 'next big thing'. She's Australia's first female to race in the Porsche Carrera Cup and many in the motorsport world believe she's our version of American Danica Patrick, the famous former Indycar race winner come NASCAR driver. She is said to live up to the nickname of the 'Devil's Princess', being a fierce competitor on the track, and a darling off it. McElrea Racing Principal Andy McElrea said the presence of women behind the wheel in motorsport was only going to grow. "Motorsport is about the only sport where women can race the men and beat them," Andy said. "Renee has come so far already and we think she's only just begun her journey in the sport. "Starting at just 14, racing go-karts, she's now going up against some of the toughest racing car drivers in motorsport competition." Renee's 991 Porsche GT3 will be on display across the weekend at RACQ Australia Zoom, with the young driver on hand to meet the fans and sign autographs. "The teenage boys and the dads are not going to mind stopping and saying hello to Renee, but more than that, she'll inspire the young girls to reach for their goals and never let gender get in the way," Andy said. WILDLIFE BENEFIT The creation of RACQ Australia Zoom was an extension of a long- standing relationship between the Club and Australia Zoo, RACQ Chief Executive Officer Operations Glenn Toms said. "We've entered into a five-year partnership with Australia Zoo and decided to create an annual member event at the Zoo, the beneficiary of which will be the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors charity," Mr Toms said. The Irwin family -- Terri, Bindi and Robert -- will present Australia Zoo's world-famous Wildlife Warriors show in the Crocoseum twice each day over the Australia Zoom weekend. Wildlife Warriors was established in 2002 by Steve and Terri Irwin, as a way to involve people in the protection of injured, threatened or endangered wildlife. Projects include the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, The Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve and conservation projects to protect Tasmanian Devils, Asian elephants, Sumatran tigers, orang-utans, black rhinos, cheetah and sea turtles. RACQ member discount tickets are limited and can be purchased through the Club, either online at racq.com, or at one of our branches. But get in quick -- they're selling fast. RACQ Australia Zoom kicks off at 9am Saturday, September 6, at Australia Zoo, 1638 Steve Irwin Way, Beerwah, one hour's drive north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway. NEWS | FEATURE
