STAY ON TRACK IN THE OUTBACK Queensland Police Service and the caravanning industry have developed a road safety initiative 'Stay on Track Outback' in response to the increase in vehicles travelling on western Queensland roads. Initially set to cover the Charleville, Roma and Longreach districts and surrounding areas, the campaign will involve police visiting caravan parks to warn tourists of the potential dangers they face when driving in the outback. "The aim of this initiative is to increase general driver education through conversation and by supplying tourists with informative education packs. By improving understanding of the challenges they may face while travelling, they will be better equipped to avoid an accident," Senior Constable Sarah Grayson, from Charleville DCPC, said. Snr Constable Grayson said that some of the key hazards people needed to be aware of included how to deal with single-track roads, wide loads or road trains. She also suggested watching for stock and wildlife on the roads, not driving at night because of kangaroos, to always notify someone if you're planning to go off-road and having a plan in the event of an incident. www.stayontrackoutback.qld.gov.au LIFESTYLE | NEWS BRISBANE LIGHTS UP FOR FESTIVAL The Brisbane Festival is set to light up the Queensland capital from September 6 to 27, with an exciting program of music, theatre, dance, comedy and circus.
