The Road Ahead : August 2014
ROADAHEAD.COM.AU 64 THE ROAD AHEAD AUG/SEP 2014 ... I opened the front door to be greeted with water about 15mm deep right through the house ... I was speechless. TO SAY OCTOBER, 2013, was a bad month for RACQ member Dan Ward would be an understatement. What was intended to be a two- week holiday in New Zealand visiting family heralded the beginning of a series of twists and turns that began when his work contract with a mining company fell through. Undeterred, Mr Ward decided to simply extend his holiday to four weeks, completely unaware of the events unfolding back at his home. A large water leak was wreaking havoc, and by the time Mr Ward MEMBER ESSENTIALS | REAL MEMBER STORIES returned a tell-tale trail of green algae was making its way up the garage door. Worse was to come. "I opened the front door to be greeted with water about 15mm deep right through the house," he said. "I was speechless. I couldn't even swear." After tracing the leak to the fridge in the kitchen, Mr Ward went outside and isolated the power and water to the house. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. Not only were the floors drenched, but the walls had begun to soak up the moisture as well. Mr Ward had the presence of mind to video the damage before phoning RACQ Insurance. Just a few hours later, Ozone Commercial Cleaning Services were on hand to clean up the water and remove the carpets from the bedrooms. RACQ Insurance arranged alternative accommodation for Mr Ward throughout the clean-up and renovations, which were completed earlier this year. "I have nothing but praise for RACQ," he said. "They have been absolutely brilliant with organising the right professionals to attend to my disaster." February was a much better month for Mr Ward. Not only was he able to move back into his home, he also started work at a mine in Papua New Guinea. The fly-in/fly-out position means Mr Ward is away from home three weeks of every month, and after his experience he goes to extra lengths to ensure history doesn't repeat itself. "I now isolate the water at the street every time, just to be safe," he said. who do you call?
